Pro-life Trends Continue in American Opinion: Poll

As Gallup releases its annual abortion opinion poll, liberal media sources spin the statistics as pro-abortion propagandists.

A majority of Americans believe abortion is morally wrong; 39 percent say it's “morally acceptable.”

Sixty-one percent of American adults—including some who describe themselves as “pro-choice”—told Gallup in a survey conducted May 5-8 that abortion should be illegal in all or most circumstances.

Forty-nine percent told Gallup they were pro-choice and 45 percent said they were pro-life, marking the first time since May 2008 that the percentage of Americans describing themselves to Gallup as pro-choice exceeded the percentage describing themselves as pro-life.

(Pro-life self-identification peaked in May 2009, when 51 percent told Gallup they were pro-life and 42 percent said they were pro-choice.)

In this year’s survey, in addition to the approximately 49 percent who said they were pro-choice and 45 percent who said they were pro-life, another approximately 7 percent would not describe themselves as either pro-choice or pro-life. This included 2 percent who said they had no opinion on the matter, 2 percent who said they did not know what the terms “pro-choice” and “pro-life” meant, and 3 percent who described themselves as mixed on the issue or neither one of the two.

From "Poll: For first time in three years, most Americans support abortion rights" by Lynda Waddington, Washington Independent 5/23/11

The number of Americans who self-identify as abortion rights advocates grew by 4 percent while the number identifying as anti-abortion rights advocates shrank by three percent, according to a new national poll. The new distribution marks the first time in about three years that most Americans believe a woman should have the right to choose.

Two-thirds of Republicans call themselves pro-life, while two-thirds of Democrats are pro-choice. Independents’ stance on abortion is closer to Democrats’ than Republicans’ stance, with 51 percent calling themselves “pro-choice” and 41 percent “pro-life.”

Political independents are evenly divided on the moral correctness of abortion, but they tilt fairly strongly toward restrictive abortion laws, with 60 percent saying abortion should be legal in a few or no circumstances.

From "Poll: More Americans 'pro-choice'" by UPI 5/23/11

Gallup said 50 percent of those polled said they think abortion should be legal under "certain circumstances" while 49 percent hold one of two other stances: 27 percent want abortion legal in all cases while 22 percent want it illegal in all cases.

The poll is based on telephone interviews conducted May 5-8 from a random sample of 1,018 adults, 18 or older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

From "Gallup Poll: Americans Want All or Most Abortions Illegal" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 5/23/11

In fact, Gallup polling shows that, since 1994, a majority of Americans have held a pro-life view wanting all or almost all abortions made illegal — and that pro-life view has strengthened with an average of 60 percent of Americans saying that over the years.

By age, Americans also oppose abortions — with 59 percent of people aged 18-34, 58 percent of those 35-54 and 64 percent of those over the age of 55 saying all or almost all abortions should become illegal. Younger Americans are most supportive of making all abortions illegal, with 24 percent of 18-34 year-olds saying so and 35 percent saying they want abortions legal only in a few circumstances.

The results make it clear that, despite their labeling of their own abortion views, a majority of Americans clearly not only oppose abortion and believe it to be a morally improper “choice,” but they believe the legal status of abortions should change and all or virtually all abortions should be prohibited. That is borne out by the results among the 18-34 group, with 51 percent saying they are pro-choice and 42 percent saying they are pro-life, the lowest percentage of any of the three age categories. However, 9 percent — almost 1 in 10 young adults — don’t know how to classify their abortion views, a mark that is twice as high as the other age categories.
