North Shore Republican Rep. Robert Dold and Democratic challenger Brad Schneider on Thursday displayed sometimes subtle but important differences on social issues including abortion rights and same-sex marriage during their first face-to-face meeting of the campaign.

Though the new district was drawn by Democrats to favor one of their own, it still displays an independent streak similar to the 10th District of years past. While 63 percent of its voters backed Obama in 2008, 53 percent backed Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and GOP Treasurer Dan Rutherford two years later.

Dold, who is serving his first term, pointed out that he was the lone House Republican who took to the floor to oppose the effort to defund Planned Parenthood . . .

Dold, of Kenilworth, said he supports civil unions but believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

. . . Roll Call is reporting that Reps. Bob Dold, R-Ill., and Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif, two center-right members facing challenging re-election campaigns, got into a confrontation with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor over his decision to schedule an abortion vote three months before Election Day. In the suburban, socially moderate districts they represent, that's the type of socially conservative vote that Democrats can exploit effectively.

From "Democrats Prevent House Passage of Late-Term Abortion Ban" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 7/31/12

House Democrats objected to a bill that would stop the policy of unlimited abortions for any reason throughout the entirety of pregnancy in the nation’s capital. The bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy in D.C. needed a two-thirds vote but enough Democrats voted against the measure to prevent it from going to the Senate.

The bill received a supportive vote of 220 to 154 with Republicans voting 203 to 6 for the bill and Democrats voting 148 to 17 against it. Republicans voting against the late term abortion ban included: Reps. Bass (NH), [Illinois' Judy] Biggert, Bono Mack, Dent, [Illinois' Robert] Dold.

The legislation, the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 3803), is strongly supported by pro-life groups and lawmakers and had the backing of Republicans and a handful of Democrats. However, with most members of the Democratic caucus voting against the bill, it did not receive enough votes to be approved.
