Florida Student Failed for Being Christian: Lawyer

Humanities professor Lance Russum has a history of bias against Christians and that's OK with Polk State College (PSC), which refused to investigate four consecutive zero grades given to an honor student (the daughter of Brian and Kristin Lewis) as punishment for refusing to renounce her faith and, as part of an assignment, conform to Russum's beliefs.
"I have reviewed the materials in Professor Russum's HUM2020–57094 course and I believe them to be appropriate based on the course description and learning outcomes. Further, I have found nothing derogatory or defamatory toward any group of people."
-- Dean Donald Painter, PSC

Painter told the Lewises that Russum provided G.L. [their daughter] with feedback, pointing out academic issues with her submissions along with the grades. He also gave them contact information for Polk State's Office of Equity and Diversity to contact if they thought she had been discriminated against.

For one assignment, Russum asked students to read three articles and submit responses to the following three questions:
• "What is something Lady Julian is saying/doing that women should not be saying/doing at that time under the Christian mythos?" Lady Julian is a figure from the students' readings.

• "From the article on the nuns what makes their defiance of male dominance so important?"

• "Why did Christianity, and its male gods, want to silence these women?"
Following her answer to all three questions, G.L. said: "In conclusion, the questions assigned are not open-minded questions. They instead are designed to lead course participants decisively to accept that Christianity is false and oppressive of women."

Along with the questions, Russum said he "did not want you to write about how wonderful you think Christianity is now because women can do A, B, or C."

According to a press release from the Liberty Counsel, a non-profit public interest law firm, Humanities Professor Lance "Lj" Russum gave a student a “zero” on four separate papers because the 16-year-old did not “conform to his personal worldviews of Marxism, Atheism, Feminism, and homosexuality.” The law firm has called for a full, private investigation of the professor and the course curriculum.

. . . Another assignment allegedly required students to discuss how “fortunate” Martin Luther was to be born in a historical moment that allowed him to “challenge the mythos of the power structure of the church.” The assignment required students to write only about the humanism of Luther and his reformation—and students were instructed in bolded text to keep theology out of the paper:

. . . Another description on the course outline criticized Christianity as one of the “most violent forms of religion the world has ever seen,” and bashed the religion for its “dominance by powerful men.” The description, supposedly for a class centered on the role of religion in the Middle Ages, claims that today’s major religions “STILL attempt to regulate the bodies of women.”

According to the Liberty Counsel, Russum’s Facebook page—which appears to have been deleted or unlisted via the website’s privacy settings—included photos of Jesus making an obscene gesture, and his email signature supposedly includes a quote from a Marxist.

The Liberty Counsel is asking for not only a full and independent investigation of Russum and the humanities course materials, but also a written apology, re-grading of the student’s assignments, and assurance that Russum’s future courses will be free from discrimination.

Among the behaviors by Russum that were uncovered:
His claims that all religion come from “human imagination.”

His introduction of students to Karl Marx “as an authority on the ‘cultural attempt to build civilization’ of the ancient Mesopotamians.”

His attempts to “deconstruct the Bible.”

His attribution to Christians of all evil in his chapter called “The Roll (sic) of Religion in the Middle Ages.”

His claim that Christianity was “one of the most violent forms of religion the world had ever seen.”

His use of a closeup of the sex organs of Michelangelo’s David to illustrate art.

His claim that there are phallic symbols in Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment that reveal “Michelangelo is claiming that being in a same sex relationship is NOT A SIN and WILL NOT keep someone out of heaven.”
